DYK?

That Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” was a redhead bank teller who flirted with Dolly’s husband Carl Dean?

That Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds was school girl Lucy Vodden - Julian Lennon’s schoolfriend and the subject of a drawing he took home to John?

That “Valerie” made famous by Amy Winehouse refers to an American friend of writer Dave McCabe's who was in trouble for driving under the influence? The band's drummer, Sean Payne, called it a "musical postcard to her, saying he is having a hard time and can she come over and see him." In an interview with Vice magazine in June 2019, Valerie was revealed to be celebrity makeup artist Valerie Star. She explained that she met McCabe and how she got arrested for driving on a suspended license.

That “Alice’s Restaurant” by Arlo Guthrie refers to the Chez Panisse restaurant owned by Chef Alice Waters, the creator of California Cuisine but that it plays no role in the story aside from being the subject of the chorus?

AMERICA’S HEROES

GENRE: Music | Americana | Military

FORMAT: 13 week TV Competition on Location | Finale on Big Shiny Floor

AUDIENCES: American Idol Fans | Military and Families | Patriots | Ex Pats overseas

On Location Host: Staff Sgt. (Ret) Thom Tran, star of Call of Duty and founder of GIs of Comedy.

CONCEPT: Imagine the juggernauts of American Idol, Britain’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance? still rolling, America’s Heroes is a variety talent competition which searches for future stars across all branches of entertainment, as well as all branches of the US Military, stationed both at home and abroad.

The tradition of music and the military dates back through the ages where music was used as morale tool for men on the march from Roman times to the Civil War. It helped the troops in the trenches in World War 1 to remember their loved ones and keep the faith that they would one day return home. Glenn Miller wrote the soundtrack to World War 2 which still resonates today. The Political statements of Country Joe and the Fish, and even Jefferson Airplane helped us realize the horrendous conditions that our troops were suffering in Vietnam and raised the consciousness of our citizens who demanded an end to the war.

Music and the military belong together like apple pie and ice cream.

Like burgers and fries.

Since the dawn of man, sound and music have been used as a weapon.

From the Neanderthal to the New World Order, audio has been manipulated, disseminated, denigrated and celebrated. The Battle of Jericho is a battle in 1400 BC, in the biblical Book of Joshua, the first of the Israelites during their conquest of Canaan. According to the narrative, the walls of Jericho fell after Joshua's army marched around the city blowing their trumpets. The radios that Hitler popularized and gifted to the German population in the 1930’s – a tool he used to broadcast his propaganda – became the weapon of choice for peaceniks Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, John Lennon et al. Music is still a weapon between East Coast and West Coast gangs as characterized by Biggie and Tupac.

From the Battle Hymn of the Republic, the musket, fife and drum, to the blasting of Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyrie by troops in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, there’s no doubt the importance that audio has played in sensation, realization, infiltration and domination throughout the epic struggles of mankind.

Nowadays, extremely high-powered sound waves can disrupt or destroy the eardrums of a target and cause severe pain, disorientation and in some cases, even death.
Less powerful sound waves can cause humans to experience nausea or discomfort. The use of these frequencies to incapacitate persons has occurred both in counter-terrorist and crowd control settings. Even police forces used sound cannons against protesters. And now we live on Zoom with ear buds. Noise as torture indeed.

ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGHWAY

Screen Shot 2020-11-29 at 3.12.56 PM.png

GENRE: Music | Travel

AUDIENCE: From Baby Boomers to Millenial Music Fans

FORMAT: TV Series

THE CONCEPT ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGHWAY is a travel/history “on the road” television series in which the Host and a weekly “Special Guest” will visit the cities and locations that played a role in the history of rock and roll in the United States. The stories will unfold through a powerful bland of eyewitness accounts and interviews, rare archival footage and photos, and richly evocative cinematic location shooting. Each episode of ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGHWAY will tell a different story, taking the viewer to a new city, venue, recording studio, or location off the beaten path.

Hop on the bus for a road trip through the canyons of Hollywood, the outlaw alleys of Nashville, and the back roads of the Middle America as we journey through the lush landscapes of rock and roll terrain.

From Seattle to Athens, from New York City to the Sunset Strip, in fact, from sea to shining sea, the United States is a cornucopia of rock and roll history. This is, after all, where the blues was born and where rock's “big bang” took place in a tiny recording studio in Memphis in July 1954. Just as Eisenhower provided the country’s highway infrastructure, we’ll chug along and detour the side roads, big city streets, and the suburban landscapes to tell the untold story of popular music in America. Over the course of the series, we’ll lead viewers on a cross-country journey, covering an era of popular culture that has spanned more than six decades, including today’s media revolution. We’ll visit the hotels, the venues, the recording studios, and the scores of locations off the beaten path. Muddy Waters to Lady Gaga…Elvis Presley to Pearl Jam…and all points in between.

People from all walks of life love music. Despite what has been written lately, fans have not stopped buying music, in whatever format is currently trending. In 2012, music purchases totaled an all-time high of 1.65 billion units. Fans not only know the lyrics, harmonies and melodies, but love the stories that their favorite artists tell. According to the New York Times best-seller list, Keith Richards’s recent memoir stayed on the hardcover best-seller list for 22 weeks. Other memoirs from Pete Townshend, Patti Smith, Steven Tyler, Sammy Hagar, Tommy Lee and Ozzy Osbourne have met with similar success. Simply, rock and roll fans want to know what happened, and to see where it happened. We also find that music fans in the United States come from all ethnic groups, age groups, and incomes. Whether a viewer is 8 or 18 or 58, she or he will in all likelihood be a music fan, and will have actively supported an artist or band at some point in their life. Driven by a favorite band, nostalgia, or current tastes, people from all age ranges buy and are interested in music, as record sales, concert sales, and merchandise sales clearly attest. The audience for ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGHWAY, then, spans as many decades as the show itself will cover.

So pack your bags, pull up a map app.and take a seat on the bus. We’re taking the ROCK ‘N’ ROLL HIGHWAY to see where legends were born, how roots took hold and how music history was made.
